One of the most shocking components of the ex-gay and conversion or reparative therapy movements is the subset of churches, predominantly Pentecostal Christian, that subject young gay members to “exorcisms” to rid them of the “demon” of homosexuality.
A recent article in Details magazine tells the story of the spiritual pain caused by one young man’s experiences with his church’s attempt to drive the demons behind his sexuality through humiliating and damaging exorcism.
Unfortunately, this young man is not alone in his experience. It is not known how many young people are forced to endure these “exorcisms” at the hands of the very community they are looking to for love and acceptance. Even one attempt is too many.
