God teaches us to love, not hate – to embrace all, not discriminate. Many mainline religious denominations are welcoming and affirming to gay people. The Episcopal Church, United Church of Christ, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, most Jewish faiths and many others have policies that are welcoming and affirming of gay and lesbian people. These welcoming congregations are in every state and in most every community and can be a great place for you to learn more.
Here is what some faiths specifically state in their religious doctrine:
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: “Gay and lesbian people, as individuals created by God, are welcome to participate fully in the life of the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.”
United Methodist Church: “We affirm all persons as equally valuable in the sight of God. We therefore work toward societies in which each person’s value is recognized, maintained, and strengthened.”
United Church of Christ: “affirms equal marriage rights for couples regardless of gender and declares that the government should not interfere with couples regardless of gender who choose to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities, and commitment of legally recognized marriage”
